A 49-year-old man is dead after his sports car crashed into an electrical pole and caught fire.

West Shore RCMP say they will not release the identity of the man, who had been living in Langford, until they reach his next of kin.

Police believe the man was driving a Porsche 911 northbound when he lost control and drove off the road into the pole. The car burst into flames.

RCMP were called to the 4200-block of Happy Valley Road, near Lindholm Road in Metchosin, at 7:15 p.m. Monday.

They used fire extinguishers to battle the flames, but could not pull the man from the car in time because of the “extreme nature of the fire and heat.”

Metchosin firefighters also assisted, arriving on the scene to find power lines down and police, as well as bystanders, using fire extinguishers. There were no passengers in the car.

Traffic on Happy Valley Road was interrupted for several hours, while the scene was investigated and the vehicle was removed from the area. Power was not restored until almost 2 a.m.

Speed may have been a factor in the collision, based on preliminary reports, West Shore RCMP said. Police are continuing the investigation with help from the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstructionist Service and the B.C. Coroners Service.

Anyone with informaiton about the collision is asked to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
