One man sustained burns to his head, hands and arms in a large fire Wednesday night involving several tents at a temporary shelter near Rock Bay Landing.

At 8:40 p.m., Victoria Fire Department received reports of multiple tents burning — with occupants possibly still inside — and propane tank explosions at a temporary tent city opposite Rock Bay Landing supportive housing at 535 Ellice St.

The fire department responded with 19 firefighters, three company engines, a ladder truck, rescue truck and command vehicle.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze, which had spread to about five or six tents and the pallet structures underneath, said Battalion Chief Tim Loewen. The quick response helped minimize the spread of the fire to nearby tents.

B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics treated the injured man. No further information is available about his condition.

The fire took several hours to clean up. The entire section of temporary structure was damaged.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
