Man linked to threat put on medical leave

A commissionaire who posted comments on Facebook suggesting the Masjid Al-Iman Mosque on Quadra Street should be blasted with a rocket launcher has been placed on medical leave.

A commissionaire who posted comments on Facebook suggesting the Masjid Al-Iman Mosque on Quadra Street should be blasted with a rocket launcher has been placed on medical leave.

The controversial comments were posted last week on the I Love Downtown Victoria Facebook page by Dan Speed.

Speed's profile, which appears to have been deleted, indicated he provided security for the Canadian Coast Guard and worked for the Department of National Defence.

John Dewar, chief executive officer of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires for Victoria, the Islands and Yukon, said the company's investigation is complete.

"We've determined that the individual has some medical issues, so at this point, he is on a medical holding list subject to resolution of the medical problems," Dewar said.

"At this stage, he is not working - We're holding his position. But he's not being paid until his medical issues have been confirmed and resolved."

Dewar said he is not sure whether Speed would return to his job with the Commissionaires, where he has worked since 2009.

"It's up to him to work with his doctor to determine what these problems are," Dewar said. "Then we would need confirmation that they have been resolved and he's eligible to return to work in some capacity."

The company must make sure Speed is able to maintain his security licence, Dewar said.

In the meantime, Victoria police are working with the B.C. hate crimes team to see whether the alleged threat meets the threshold for a hate crime.

Investigators interviewed a suspect on the weekend, but the individual was not arrested or charged, said spokesman Mike Tucker.

In October 2011, Speed was placed on a 12-month peace bond with conditions to stay away from a woman he was involved with without her express consent.

He was also ordered to take counselling for such things as anger management, if directed by his probation officer.
