Saanich police actions were not to blame for a man’s life-threatening injuries discovered at a motor-vehicle incident July 7 at Cook Street and Cloverdale Avenue, the civilian oversight agency for police has found.

The Independent Investigations Office, which looks into police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, made the finding in a bulletin issued Monday.

The IIO said police responded to a report about noon and found a man had been seriously hurt.

The report said the man, who survived, had injuries that appeared to have been self-inflicted. Both independent witnesses and the man confirmed that was the case.

The man sustained only minor injuries while being taken into police custody.
