CFB Esquimalt is erecting new signs this week warning the public not to trespass on its Mary Hill Training Area in Metchosin.
The training area is located near Pedder Bay, adjacent to William Head prison.
A spokesman for the base said the area could contain unexploded ordnance that could cause death or injury if disturbed.
Previous signage on the 1.76-square-kilometre property has either disappeared or fallen down. The area is only partially fenced.
Members of the public should be aware there is no safe time to access the property and trespassing is against the law and dangerous, said the base spokesman.
The Royal Canadian Navy has used the property for military training since the 1930s, but there have been no live firing exercises since 2018.
It’s currently used by the Canadian Armed Forces and other agencies for training that does not include the use of any type of ammunition.
The training can occur day or night every day of the year, including weekends and holidays.
The spokesman said only trained professionals can determine if a munition item is dangerous.
Anyone who sees something that looks like it may be a munition is advised not to touch it, to leave the area, and to call 911 or local police.
