Frequent fires at Mill Bay’s Pioneer Square have prompted RCMP to call the most recent blaze “suspicious.”

”The investigation is currently considered suspicious, only because this is now the third fire in recent months at that location,” RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau said Sunday.

RCMP fire investigators along with the fire department will be searching the site on Monday, he said.

The 12,000-square-foot Pioneer Square building in Mill Bay was destroyed. It had been empty at the time.

Fires had earlier broken out in February and in November.

Pioneer Square is on a 6.25-acre site owned by a Victoria company, Limona Group. A company spokesperson said Friday it was part-way through a project to de-construct Pioneer Square.

He said the company had been forced to spend up to six figures on site security.
