More community amenities have been unveiled for Victoria High School, which is undergoing a $79.7-million seismic upgrade and expansion.

Most are linked to the site’s neighbourhood-learning centre, where office and meeting space for the Inter-Cultural Association will be added.

The association is a non-profit society that helps refugees and immigrant settle in the region.

The centre will also have a kitchen and an outdoor classroom, along with child-care spaces.

Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside said that while schools are for learning, they are also “important community hubs.”

“With the new community amenities included, this facility will be worth the wait for the thousands of people it will benefit for generations to come.”

The construction schedule for Vic High has been pushed back by a year due to issues like getting workers and supplies — common concerns in the construction sector. The goal now is to have the school ready for students and staff in September 2023.

In the meantime, the school community has been relocated to the former S.J. Willis Education Centre.

Also coming to Vic High is an artificial-turf field. Funding partners include the Victoria High School Alumni Association, Bays United Football Club and the City of Victoria.
