Motorcyclist dies in crash on Nanaimo highway

The northbound motorcycle collided with a truck turning left near Oliver Road, RCMP said.

A motorcyclist was pronounced dead in hospital after a collision with a pickup truck early Monday on the Island Highway in Nanaimo. 

Nanaimo RCMP Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said a northbound Yamaha motorcycle is believed to have collided about 5:15 a.m. with a Dodge D350 turning left at Oliver Road. 

B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics treated the motorcyclist at the scene and transported him to hospital, O’Brien said. 

The truck driver was uninjured and co-operated with police. Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as factors in the crash. 

The highway was reopened about 9:30 a.m. 

Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services have been informed and the crash victim’s family has been notified. 

No witnesses were immediately located. Police would like to speak with anyone with information or dashcam footage.
