Mechanical problems with the Queen of New Westminster’s engine propulsion system have sidelined the ferry for the rest of the week.
The engine problem with the ferry, one of the main vessels carrying passengers between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, arose Tuesday, resulting in the cancellation of several sailings.
The 60-year-old ferry, which is on the list of vessels that B.C. Ferries is aiming to retire beginning in 2029, is now at Tsawwassen terminal.
Details about its repair are expected Thursday, a company spokesperson said.
B.C. Ferries has added two extra evening sailings using another vessel Wednesday and Thursday to handle traffic, at 6 p.m. out of Swartz Bay and 8 p.m. from Tsawwassen.
On Saturday, sailings have been added at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. from Swartz Bay and at 4 p.m. from Tsawwassen.
Multiple sailings have been cancelled this week.

Other sailings on the route are expected to proceed as scheduled. Further updates will be provided as soon as information is available, B.C. Ferries said.
The ferry company said its customer service centre will contact those with bookings, who will be offered another sailing time if possible or a refund.
