Nanaimo’s residential property taxes are rising by 7.7 per cent this year.

For an average home in Nanaimo, the tax increase will mean an additional $204 per year.

The rise includes an increase of 6.7 per cent to cover operating costs and one per cent for the General Asset Management Reserve.

Notices will be sent to homeowners by the end of the month and taxes are due by July 2.

Other charges not related to the city, such as those for schools and the Regional District of Nanaimo, will also be on the tax notice.

Nanaimo’s budget for 2024 includes hiring three new RCMP officers, part of a program to add 15 officers over five years.

Also in the plan are new washrooms at Maffeo Sutton Park and funds to cover the first full year of 20 firefighters who were hired in August of last year, plus 20 more firefighters in 2025.

Completing a major water supply project and constructing two large water mains to improve the water supply network in the community are also on the agenda.
