Nanaimo RCMP said Thursday it is reviewing dashcam and surveillance video to identify a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Harmac Road near Cedar on Oct. 24.
Charles Tommy, a 21-year-old member of Snuneymuxw First Nation, died by the side of the road after being hit by a vehicle, despite live-saving efforts by passers by who found him.
The incident happened at 7 p.m just east of the Cedar Road Bridge as Tommy was returning home after fishing.
“Witnesses reported seeing Charles both standing on the shoulder and lying in the roadway before he was struck or run over,” said RCMP. “The driver of the vehicle involved may not be aware that they struck a person.”
Police have taken statements and collected dashcam footage and video surveillance, which they are “actively reviewing to identify the vehicle involved.”
In a public plea this week, family said Charles was the loving father of a seven-month-old son and was known for his sense of humour, which earned him the nickname “Chuckles.” He was also an avid fisherman who shared his catch with the elders in the community.
“His parents are devastated at the loss of their eldest child and only son,” said RCMP.
Police are asking the driver of the vehicle involved to come forward.
