The Nellie McClung library branch in Saanich will be closed for three days this week due to geotechnical work.

Greater Victoria Public Library said its library branch at 3950 Cedar Hill Rd. will be fully closed from Aug. 19 to 21 while work is being conducted by the Capital Region Housing Corporation and the District of Saanich.

There will be no access to the library’s drop-off box or its parking lot.

Due dates for borrowed items remains unchanged, but library holds during the period of the branch closure are being extended until Aug. 24.

During the closure period, library items can be returned at any other branch within the Greater Victoria Public Library system, the notice said.

The library branch location has been eyed as a potential site for a rental housing development.

The project, a partnership between the District of Saanich, the Capital Region Housing Corporation and the province, would see the single-storey 14,000-square-foot library replaced by a mixed project that would include a ground-floor library of up to 30,000 square feet, and as many as 210 lower-cost rental housing units.

Saanich council unanimously endorsed a rezoning application for the site in June.

District staff has suggested that construction could begin sometime in 2025.
