The Sooke School District has hired a new associate superintendent to work with incoming superintendent Paul Block.
D’Arcy Deacon will assume the role on Jan. 1, the same day that Block becomes the leader of one of the fastest-growing school districts in the province.
Block, who is currently deputy superintendent, was chosen to take over the top job after incumbent Scott Stinson announced his retirement in April.
Deacon is coming to the Sooke School District from the Gulf Islands School District, where he has served as both associate superintendent and director of instruction.
He has over 17 years of experience in the kindergarten-Grade 12 sector and is currently pursing a doctorate in educational leadership through the University of Western Ontario.
Block said that Deacon had many achievements in the smaller Gulf Islands district, including working to bring more parity to the graduation rates of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
“That kind of drive and commitment to student success speaks for itself, and there is no doubt that he will lead with the same passion for students and staff in the Sooke School District.”
Monica Braniff is moving from associate superintendent to deputy superintendent.
