460 new cases of COVID in Island Health as B.C. sees new record high

B.C. reported another single-day record for new COVID-19 cases Thursday, with 4,383 new cases across the province, including 460 in Island Health.

More than half the new cases are in the Fraser Health region.

As of Thursday, there were 17,357 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, including 856 in Island Health.

The province recorded one more death related to COVID-19, in Interior Health, for a total of 2,420 to date.

Through whole genome sequencing of positive cases, the province has detected 2,825 cases of the Omicron variant, including 548 in Island Health, which has the third-highest number of cases of the variant after Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions.

Hospitalizations were not included in Thursday’s numbers, but provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry is set to provide an update Friday morning.

Six new health-care facility outbreaks were reported Thursday in Fraser Health, for a total of 13 in the province, including one in Island Health. On Tuesday, Island Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Amica Douglas House, a long-term care home in Victoria, after two staff members tested positive.

As of Thursday, 82.9 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. had received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 20.4 per cent of adults had received a third dose.
