CF-18 Hornet fighter jets are conducting planned training over southern B.C., including Vancouver Island, from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

An announcement from North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the jets would be working with the Canadian Air Defence Sector at 22 Wing North Bay, Ont., and civilian air-traffic control in the Vancouver area.

They will be flying at high altitude but could be visible at times along the southeast coast of Vancouver Island and south of Williams Lake, with contracted aircraft being intercepted or escorted by jets.

Such air-defence exercises by NORAD are routine and can entail such scenarios as airspace-restriction violations, hijackings and response to unknown aircraft.

The exercise taking place Wednesday was developed in co-ordination with NAV Canada.
