One person is dead after a vehicle was discovered submerged in a body of water along the Gold River Highway on Sunday, Campbell River RCMP say.

The vehicle was found about 12:30 a.m. when a passing driver on Highway 28 between Campbell River and Strathcona Park Lodge noticed that highway barriers were out of place. Police said the vehicle had veered off the highway and plunged down a steep embankment into the water.

“A vehicle was located fully submerged,” said a statement released by the RCMP. “Tragically, one person did not survive.”

Police said Monday there is no indication that anyone else was involved in the single-vehicle crash.

RCMP said the investigation is in the early stages. The name of the deceased person was not released.

Campbell River RCMP, police divers and the Campbell River Search and Rescue Team are working to recover the vehicle and body.

A notice on DriveBC indicates that a collision occurred at Upper Campbell Lake, 19 kilometres west of Campbell River, and warned travellers to expect major delays. Traffic is moving with single-lane alternating controls.

Anyone with any information or dashcam footage is asked to contact Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221.
