A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

A resident of an apartment building on Selkirk Avenue in Esquimalt died in a Saturday morning fire, Esquimalt Fire Rescue said Thursday.

The fire was centred on the third floor of the four-storey Selkirk Shores complex, said Esquimalt Fire Chief Matt Furlot.

A body was found in the building. Victoria police determined that the death was not suspicious.

Firefighters from Esquimalt, CFB Esquimalt and Victoria managed to contain the fire after it reached the fourth storey, Furlot said.

Sixty-six people were evacuated from the building and offered shelter from the rainy weather in a B.C. Transit bus that was brought to the scene.

Most were able to return to their units, but a few people in the affected area were displaced.

Furlot said a cause of the fire, which was reported about 10:45 a.m. Saturday, has not yet been determined.
