One person is unaccounted for after a fire early Wednesday destroyed a residence in south Nanaimo.

The fire was reported just after 5 a.m. at a home at 1019 Victoria Rd., which was engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived.

Witnesses said that shortly after the fire was reported by someone believed to be a resident, they might have re-entered the home.

Nanaimo RCMP said Wednesday afternoon that the person had not been located.

Firefighters remained at the scene into the afternoon because the fire had not been completely extinguished.

Both police and Nanaimo Fire Rescue are investigating.

Police ask anyone with information on the whereabouts of the missing resident to call them at 250-754-2345.
