Operations not affected by fire at Rock Bay recycling facility that handles cardboard, glass: CRD

The fire at Cascades Recovery+ recycling plant on Bridge Street was confined to stored recyclables, burning several pallets of styrofoam and electronics

Blue-box recycling service won’t be affected by a fire early Wednesday at a Rock Bay recycling plant that handles commercial paper, cardboard and glass for the Capital Regional District via a contract with Recycle B.C., the CRD says.

The fire at Cascades Recovery+ recycling plant at 2800 Bridge St. was confined to stored recyclables, burning several pallets of styrofoam and electronics, and did not reach the plant’s interior.

“We are business as usual,” plant manager Jackie Tudor-Jones said. “The fire took place in a corner of our facility where we had some bales stored, and there was no damage to our building and nobody was hurt.

“I think we got pretty lucky as far as fires go.”

Victoria Fire Department crews, who responded to the blaze about 12:10 a.m., kept the flames from spreading to a nearby warehouse.

Victoria police are involved in investigating the cause of the fire.
