Ravi Parmar, the newly elected NDP MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca, will officially resign as a trustee and chair of the Sooke School Board on July 27.

He chose the date after it was announced that he and fellow NDP MLA, Joan Phillip, would be sworn in on July 28.

A byelection to replace Parmar on the board is expected in October.

Parmar and Phillip, who represents Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, were both elected in byelections held June 24.

“It has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the memories we have created,” he said in a Twitter message about his years on the board

He took a leave of absence from the chair during his campaign for provincial office, with trustee Amanda Dowhy stepping in to take on the role.

The 28-year-old Parmar was Canada’s youngest school trustee when he was first elected in 2014 at the age of 20. The board voted him in as chair in 2017 and he held the position until his leave took effect.
