One person is dead after a northbound commercial delivery truck hit a concrete median and flipped into the southbound lanes on Highway 19 near Parksville early Friday, said police.

Highway 19 between the 46 and 51 exits near the Englishman River Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions in the wake of the crash, but reopened around 2 p.m. A detour was available on Highway 19A.

Oceanside RCMP said the crash occurred about 6 a.m. and involved a single vehicle. The passenger died at the scene.

The truck’s driver and a second passenger were transported to hospital and are expected to survive, police said.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said four ambulances and an air ambulance attended the scene.

One person who was transported to hospital by air ambulance is in serious condition and another was transported by ground to hospital in stable condition, the ambulance service said.

Initial investigations determined the truck lost control while travelling north and hit the concrete median before landing in the southbound lane between the two exits, police said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
