A pedestrian struck by a pickup truck in the northbound lanes of the Patricia Bay Highway on Friday died at scene, Saanich police confirmed on Sunday.

Shortly after 8 p.m., emergency responders shut down the northbound lanes of the highway in the 5100 block near Claremont Avenue because a pedestrian had been hit.

Insp. Damian Kowalewich of Saanich police said in a statement that the 29-year-old woman, local to the capital region, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police, B.C. Ambulance Service, and the Saanich Fire Department all attended and determined that a pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck in the northbound lanes,” he said. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman.”

The pedestrian was not in or near a crosswalk when the collision occurred, he said.

Kowalewich said the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and has been cooperative with the ongoing investigation by police collision analysts, adding that impairment and speed have been ruled out as contributing factors.
