Pit bull to be destroyed after ‘atrocious’ bites

A pit bull that bit four people in a Colwood home will be destroyed. The 100-pound pit bull-mastiff mix has a history of being passed between owners, which is a concern, said Don Brown, the Capital Regional District’s chief bylaw officer.

A pit bull that bit four people in a Colwood home will be destroyed.

The 100-pound pit bull-mastiff mix has a history of being passed between owners, which is a concern, said Don Brown, the Capital Regional District’s chief bylaw officer.

The dog seriously bit four people in a home on Pickford Road around 12:30 a.m. Saturday after some of the people in the home became rowdy while playing video games.

Kyla Johnson, 22, who lives in the home’s basement suite, said her dad started to rough-house with the pit bull and the dog bit his arm.

She tried to pull the dog off and was bitten herself, leaving her with wounds to both her arms, a leg and abdomen. Johnson said she adopted Rex, a four-year-old pit bull, last summer.

The current owner had rescued the dog from someone who planned to put it down, Brown said.

Brown said in some cases where a dog bites someone, animal-control officers will declare the dog dangerous, which requires the owner to keep the dog muzzled and on leash and to display a dangerous dog sign at their home.

However, in this case, the seriousness of the bites led to the decision to kill the dog.

“This is four people bitten and some pretty atrocious bites,” he said. “For the sake of public safety and concerns about liability, it’s not good to be putting it back into the public.”
