Nanaimo RCMP say they will be “firm but fair” in dealing with partiers during Bathtub Race festivities this weekend.

Police are planning enhanced patrols by uniformed officers from Friday through Sunday as the city celebrates the 56th World Champion Bathtub Race, set to start at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Police will be checking beer gardens, along with the downtown area and nightclubs.

“We do not want the actions of a few individuals to ruin what has become known as a fun but safe weekend,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

Patrols will include deployment of the Nanaimo RCMP’s rigid-hulled inflatable, with the RCMP West Coast Marine Unit in the wings.

Traffic officers will also be out in force looking for impaired drivers.
