Schools have been locked down and children are safe indoors, the Comox Valley RCMP said in social media post late afternoon on Friday.

RCMP determined there was no active threat near Lake Trail Community School in Courtenay after a student reported seeing a man with a long gun in the woods close by just before school let out Friday.

The student told school staff about a man with a long gun in Roy Stewart Morrison Nature Park and said she heard two shots fired, RCMP said. The report came in to Comox Valley RCMP around 2:20 p.m.

The school was put under hold and secure protocol while police rushed to the area.

Students were dismissed after officers concluded an exhaustive search of the park and surrounding neighbourhood with police dogs and an RCMP helicopter. They did not locate a man with a long gun and no similar reports about a man or shots fired have been received, RCMP said.

The student witness described the man as mixed race and wearing boots, but was not able to describe his clothing or anything else about him.

Police said they would remain in the area and continue to investigate. They are asking anyone who was in the park or the area between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and report anything suspicious.
