RCMP believe foul play was involved in the death of a 53-year-old man on Cowichan Tribes land on Sunday.
North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP said they responded to a report of an assault in a home on Mulaqw Road just before 5 a.m.
Officers arrived to find a man seriously injured. Police performed first aid and the man was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police suspect foul play was involved in the man’s death based on an initial investigation of the scene.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and is working with the RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages, but they do not believe the death is related to the double homicide in Duncan on Christmas Eve, in which police said two victims were targeted.
Friends and family identified the couple as Nellie Williams and Francois Shurie. Police identified two people of interest in the Dec. 24 attack.
“This tragic incident, coming so soon after the Christmas Eve tragedy, has shocked and saddened the public,” said North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP Inspector Chris Bear.
