After they spoke with the youth and viewed video surveillance, officers determined the assault hadn’t taken place, Nanaimo RCMP said.

Nanaimo RCMP say school-liaison officers will follow up with a youth and his parents after the 12-year-old falsely reported being assaulted with a knife.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said police want to let the youth know the gravity of his actions and ensure he doesn’t do anything like that again.

Police were contacted about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday about a knife assault near the McDonald’s on Bowen Road, and say they responded within minutes with a large presence.

They detained three men, including one identified by the youth, but after they spoke with the youth and viewed video surveillance, officers determined the assault hadn’t taken place, police said.

Two of the men were released without charges, while a 43-year-old was arrested on outstanding warrants from Comox and the Oceanside area.

He has since been released and is due in court Tuesday.
