B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office is investigating an arrest by Quadra Island RCMP that resulted in a serious dog-bite injury.

At 6:40 p.m. Sunday, police received a complaint about a person who had been yelling and screaming all day and creating a disturbance in the 4000-block of Spruce Place. When police arrived, they saw a person inside a trailer who appeared to be holding a weapon. The person refused to leave the trailer.

The Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team and back-up units were called. When ERT arrived, the person left the trailer but then tried to go back in. A police service dog was sent in to help with the arrest and the person received a serious dog bite.

Police provided first aid at the scene and the person was taken to hospital.

Quadra Island notified the IIO, the civilian-led police oversight agency responsible for conducting investigations into incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions of a police officer, whether on or off duty.

The IIO is asking anyone with relevant information to call the toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
