A 24-year-old man is being held in custody after another man was stabbed in the throat at a Port Alberni residence on Tuesday night.

The victim was taken to West Coast Hospital, where emergency room staff were able to provide life-saving treatment, Port Alberni RCMP said. He remains in stable condition.

The two men were known to each other, according to police.

RCMP responded to a 911 call at 10:25 p.m. at a home in the 4000 block of Maitland Street.

When police arrived, they were told the assailant had fled on foot. Additional officers were called in to assist with the search while a forensic team examined the scene.

Officers tracked the man into the early morning hours. A 24-year-old suspect was arrested without issue.

Police requested that the court remand the suspect into custody as officers complete their investigation. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.

Port Alberni RCMP said there are no public safety concerns as the victim and suspect are known to one another.
