A vehicle hit a utility pole on Sooke Road near Church Road early Thursday, knocking out power to more than 6,000 BC Hydro customers in the area.

Power was restored to most people by 10 a.m.

Island RCMP said a call came in around 6:12 a.m. about a vehicle hitting the power pole. The crash brought down power lines.

A notice from the District of Sooke said one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Church Road remained closed at Highway 14 about 11:30 a.m. but Highway 14 was open.

BC Hydro crews were expected to remain on site all day, with flaggers directing traffic in the area, and some delays expected.

BC Hydro’s outage map showed two overlapping outages: one west of Sooke Road and north of Gatewood Road, and another west of Alderbrook Ranch Road and north of Maple Avenue.

In a social media post, the Sooke School District warned of traffic delays but said all schools were expected to be open Thursday morning.

The District of Sooke said further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
