About 75 people gathered in Gold River this week to open a new RCMP detachment to serve the surrounding areas of Nootka Sound and Tahsis.
Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation chiefs Jerry Jack and Nathan George joined students from elementary and secondary schools, local councillors and RCMP officers for the opening ceremony.
“Our goal with this new detachment is to provide the best service we can, and to enhance our connection with each of you,” said Nootka Sound Detachment Commander Sgt. Greg Young. “We’re not just here to enforce the law; we’re here to be part of the community, to listen, and to work together to address the unique needs and concerns that arise.”
The new detachment replaces a 50-year-old building. It incorporates net-zero strategies and solar panels to provide renewable energy, with mechanical and electrical systems designed to enhance the electrification, including a photovoltaic system.
The Nootka Sound RCMP detachment has front-line police officers and support staff to serve the villages of Gold River and Tahsis as well as Tsaxana, home of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation.
RCMP Chief Supt. Shawna Baher said the new detachment will be a cornerstone for listening, learning and engaging with the communities we serve.
