A popular fish restaurant's waterfront footprint on the Broughton Pier will change slightly after Victoria council voted unanimously to approve a development permit with variances.

Red Fish Blue Fish has been selling takeout seafood dishes out of a repurposed cargo container on the Broughton Pier since 2007. The development permit application from the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority swam through council Thursday after a staff report noted the changes would be minimal and would have little impact on the surrounding area.

City staff noted it was a minor expansion in conjunction with upgrades designed to extend the life of the pier.

The work means the restaurant would be consolidating operations into a larger structure.

The variances allow the number of buildings on the lot to increase to three from one, eliminates the need for a long-term bicycle stall and reduces the setback from the high-water mark to zero from 7.5 metres.

According to the staff report, adhering to the high-water mark setback would result in not being able to have buildings on the pier, contrary to the goal of creating vibrant public areas.
