Residents of Nanaimo’s tent city on city hall’s lawn were issued an eviction notice late Tuesday morning.
The notice required the protesters to be gone by noon, said Kevin Donaghy, but many still remain. Tenters arrived March 12 to lobby for supportive housing in Nanaimo.
A meeting was held with a city official about possible places to pitch their tents, he said.
Campers are in the midst of figuring out what to do and where to go, he said.
Mayor Bill McKay said that the notice was issued because campers had promised to move off city hall land if council approved a package of measures to address homelessness.
The entire package was approved at Monday night’s meeting.
The tent city had grown to about two dozen tents by Monday but McKay said numbers had dropped by midday Tuesday.
