Saanich has given three readings to a new bylaw to ensure cost- of-living wage increases for its non-union staff are tied to those given to unionized employees.

Council unanimously approved the Exempt Staff Bylaw, which will ensure that the annual cost-of-living adjustment, benefits and working conditions for exempt staff and CUPE 2011 staff are equal.

The bylaw notes the amount of any cost-of-living adjustment for employees not covered by collective agreements will be based on the annual market average. The market average will be determined each year by a survey of the market.

CUPE Local 2011 represents 1,200 workers who provide public services involving water, wastewater, sanitation, roads, parks, planning, recreation centres, and support for police and fire services.
