Saanich is lowering the speed limit Tuesday on a portion of Prospect Lake Road following a safety review of the problem road.
The district plans to install signs indicating the new 30 kilometre an hour speed limit between Estelline Road and Goward Road, down from 50 km/h.
The reduced speed limit is one of the recommendations that came out of a safety review of the 7.2-kilometre road that was launched after a string of crashes on the road in late 2019. The review was completed in July, with recommendations to install a rumble strip in the centre of the road south of Munn Road, reduce a section of the road to one lane of traffic yielding to northbound vehicles and a major reconstruction of the intersection of West Saanich and Prospect Lake Road.
Saanich Mayor Fred Haynes has said the district will follow through on all recommendations.
Residents of the area have been calling for safety improvements on the winding road. About 3,100 vehicles travel the road daily, and that number has been increasing by about two per cent each year, according to the safety review, as commuters use the rural road as an alternative to the congested highway.
