Police are asking Islanders to search their memories to help find a missing Montreal man who was last seen in Saanich.

Jean-Michel Cabanes, 70, had rented a motorhome that he had arranged to return by Oct. 26 but did not show up. He was last seen on Oct. 14.

The motorhome was found on Oct. 29 in the parking lot at China Beach in the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park’s day-use area. The lot is normally used by people heading along the Mystic Beach trail.

Police believe Cabanes arrived at the lot on Oct. 20 or 21.

Search-and-rescue crews have scoured the rugged area but have not found him.

Police are hoping that someone who was in the parking lot between Oct. 20 and Oct. 29 may recall seeing Cabanes, who hikes with telescoping poles, or the motorhome, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Class C RV.

Cabanes, who had planned to spend a few days on the Island, never boarded his scheduled flight home to Montreal on Oct. 28. His family is concerned for his well-being and say it is out of character for him not to be in regular contact.

Cabanes is white, six-foot-two and about 240 pounds with grey hair. He speaks fluent English with a French accent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321.
