Saanich police say they shot a beanbag round Tuesday morning at a “highly agitated” man who was acting erratically, assaulting people and damaging property.

He was being aggressive toward vehicles and made contact with people trying to intervene, police said.

The beanbag was fired after attempts to de-escalate the situation failed.

Police said they were called to the intersection of Glanford Avenue and Quadra Street about 11 a.m. and decided to use a beanbag shotgun so the man could be safely taken into custody.

He was taken to hospital for assessment and the case remains under investigation.

No further information was immediately released.

A beanbag round is among “less-lethal” options used by police to bring a suspect under control.

Victoria police used a beanbag round in March to get to a man in distress who was armed with a knife, and also used a beanbag round in January to subdue a man who brandished a hatchet downtown.

Both Saanich and Victoria police have a policy that anyone who has a less-lethal option used on them is medically assessed.
