A new sculpture, The Lost Airmen of the Empire, honours Allied airmen at the Patricia Bay Air Station who gave their lives during the Second World War.
The monument is situated on Hospital Hill, along Mills Road, on the north side of Victoria International Airport. The site was home to medical facilities for the Royal Canadian Air Force Station Patricia Bay during the war.
The sculpture features 25 steel Cooper’s hawk feathers. The Cooper’s hawk is a predator known for its extraordinary agility in flight and ferocity in hunting.
The names of the lost airmen are displayed on the feathers.
A dedication of the memorial sculpture, created by Illarion Gallant, is set for 10 a.m. on June 1.
