Traffic flows again at sinkhole site north of Nanaimo

More work needs to be done

Update, Nov. 21, 2021: Highway 19 north of Nanaimo reopened to traffic Saturday night after partial repairs at the site of a huge sinkhole that closed the highway Thursday afternoon.

Transportation Minister Rob Fleming has said more work still needs to be done.

The public will be notified in advance of any work, said the minister. He advised drivers to check drivebc.ca for updates on the work and any closures.

The sinkhole, at Superior Road in Lantzville, was described as the size of a vehicle. A long detour was in effect through local roads.

Drivers rerouted as a result of a sinkhole on Highway 19 near Superior Road in Lantzville, about four kilometres north of Nanaimo, face significant delays, Nanaimo RCMP say.

Traffic is being detoured onto Superior Road through to Lantzville Road.

The highway had been closed in both directions on Thursday as a result of the sinkhole.

The Ministry of Transportation said Friday crews have begun the process of fixing the damage and installing new culverts.
