The site of the former Crofton Elementary School has been sold for $1.81 million.
The buyer is Jian Xiang Zhai. It was not known if there are any plans in place for the approximately one-hectare property.
The old school was torn down in 2020. It stood long after a new elementary school was built a block away, opening in 2009.
Cowichan Valley School District received $650,000 in provincial funding for the demolition.
The building dated back to 1948, but, despite efforts to maintain it, many in the area favoured tearing it down after break-ins, graffiti attacks and a 2018 arson.
Cowichan Valley School Board chairwoman Candace Spilsbury said the site had been “in limbo” for many years.
She said she is looking forward to it being developed into “something that’s important for the community.”
Community consultation for the site in 2019 brought up options such as affordable housing, community gardens and seniors’ housing.
