Workers are busting up and repouring concrete at six bus stops along Sooke Road to correct a $90,000 design error.

Concrete pads for bus shelters were built 10 centimetres too high, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The pads are intended for bus shelters.

Buses pulling off Sooke Road were in danger of hitting the edge of the pads with their bumpers. After some consideration, it was decided the best way to fix the problem was to start over and pour new, lower slabs.

Despite the extra work, the bus pullouts and shelters are expected to be completed and ready for use before the end of spring as planned.

The Transportation Ministry spokeswoman said several parties were involved in the design of the bus pullouts and shelters.

The government is now working to determine how the mistake was made and address the cost increase.

The bus pullouts and shelters are part of $10 million worth of work on the roads connecting Langford, Sooke and Port Renfrew announced by the province in January.

The work also includes an eastbound queue jump at Jacklin Road in Langford to give priority to buses re-entering traffic, new signs at Gillespie, Kangaroo and Parkland roads, and a pullout for slow-moving vehicles between Sooke and French Beach.

The work is expected to be complete by summer.
