Investigators with the Sooke Fire Rescue Service have determined the cause of an apartment fire was likely careless smoking or the careless discarding of smoking material.

The fire broke out in the 20-unit apartment, Grant Manor, at 6921 Grant Rd., on July 4. Every suite was damaged and two were destroyed.

All occupants made it out of the building without injury.

It took 35 firefighters from departments in Sooke, East Sooke and Metchosin to bring the blaze under control.

The Sooke fire department said the owner of the building has indicated the building will be repaired possibly in three to four months.
