A suspect has been arrested in a violent sexual assault last week in the downtown area, say Victoria police.

A woman was approached by an unknown man just before 1:30 a.m. on July 18, taken to the green space next to the Commerce Canoe sculpture near Wharf Street and Pandora Avenue and physically and sexually assaulted.

The victim ran to a group of people nearby after the assault and the suspect fled.

The suspect was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on Ellice Street in the Rock Bay area, and evidence related to the case was seized, police said.

Const. Terri Healy thanked everyone who provided information and CCTV footage related to the incident, which she said helped police in making the arrest.

She said police take their responsibility to investigate sexual assaults very seriously, noting it takes a “tremendous amount of bravery and courage” to report incidents of sexual violence.

The suspect, who cannot be named until charges are sworn, was released on conditions “designed to maintain public safety and the safety of those involved,” police said.

No further details about the investigation were released.
