A man wanted in connection with a suspected fraudulent cancer fundraiser in Calgary has been arrested in Victoria.

Victoria police brought a man into custody Tuesday on Yates Street, near Central Middle School. They were acting on a tip from the public that had been passed along by their Calgary counterparts.

The case stemmed from a July 8 silent auction held by a man in Calgary, supposedly to raise money for his cancer treatment. The venue was provided for free and guests paid about $7,500 for auction items.

After the event, people who had attended began to get suspicious of the man. A police file was opened in August.

Kristopher Nicholas Cook, 28, is being held on a six-day remand, pending arrangements to send him back to Calgary.
