SUV driver injured after hitting dump-truck debris on highway, losing control

Police responded about 5:10 a.m. Tuesday after a report that a northbound dump truck had struck a concrete median.

The driver of an SUV was taken to hospital with minor injuries Tuesday morning after losing control of the vehicle on debris from a dump truck that had hit a concrete highway median.

West Shore RCMP said the 2007 Pontiac Torrent was southbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near Spencer Close and McCallum Road in Langford when it hit the debris and a concrete barrier.

Police responded about 5:10 a.m. after a report that a northbound dump truck had struck a median, which was pushed into the southbound lanes.

Both southbound lanes were initially shut down and later opened to single-lane traffic while Emcon Services crews worked to clear the debris.

The highway cleanup and towing of the dump truck took several hours and caused “significant” delays for morning commuters, police said.

Traffic was diverted at Leigh Road following the crash and some Sooke School District buses were delayed.

Highway cameras showed southbound traffic backed up on the Trans-Canada Highway at West Shore Parkway as well as at Millstream Road.

Police determined speed was a factor in the dump-truck crash and the driver was given a ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for speeding relative to road conditions.
