The taps have been turned off at Rutledge Park less than a month after the opening of a new splash pad. Beckwith Park is also affected.
The Rutledge splash pad at the renovated park just off Cloverdale Avenue, which opened June 24, has been closed so Saanich staff can resolve issues with the equipment.
In a statement, the district noted there are no concerns about human health.
“Potable water is entering the storm drain system which may have impacts on aquatic life downstream,” the district said.
“The district takes the protection of the environment seriously, so the splash pads are being closed out of an abundance of caution as our investigation and maintenance work continues, it said.
“We realize this may disrupt visitors’ plans to enjoy the splash pad, and apologize for any inconvenience,” district staff wrote in a statement Friday afternoon. The district expects the splash pad to be closed throughout the weekend.
Staff noted the rest of Rutledge remains open, including the recently updated playground, sport courts and walking paths.
The park reopened June 24 after undergoing a $1.45-million overhaul.
The new park was designed by Vancouver based landscape architecture firm VDZ+A Consulting. Upgrades included a new washroom building, modern playground equipment and the long-awaited splash pad.
The splash pad at Beckwith Park in the north Quadra neighbourhood will also be out of service.
Saanich staff announced Friday evening similar issues to the Rutledge Park equipment had been found.
Updates on both parks will be added to the district website, Saanich.ca.
