Nanaimo motorists facing a parking crunch due to downtown construction work are getting a break with free temporary parking set to start Tuesday.

Free two-hour street parking will be available on Commercial Street south of Wharf Street, Front Street, Chapel Street, Church Street, Bastion Street, Anchor Way and Cameron Road.

“City council heard from our partners, the public and downtown business owners and we responded,” Mayor Leonard Krog said Friday.

“We encourage all residents and visitors to our beautiful city to continue supporting downtown businesses while we work towards a more accessible, vibrant, dynamic and thriving Commercial Street.”

All businesses are expected to remain open during the project, which started this month and is scheduled to wrap up in May 2025.

The free parking does not include parkades or parking lots. Parking signage will be updated. Drivers are asked to follow posted parking rules.
