Thousands on the Island’s west coast are without power Sunday due to a circuit failure. B.C. Hydro says 2,337 people in Tofino and 2,307 in Ucluelet are affected by a transmission circuit failure that occurred just before 10 a.m. Crews were expected on site around 12:45 p.m.

Repairing a transmission circuit failure can be a long process, sometimes requiring specialized equipment, B.C. Hydro says on its website. “We’ll often look to provide electricity to impacted customers via an alternate path through ‘switching’ while crews work on repairs,” B.C. Hydro says.

A circuit failure happens when a major transmission line is not able to deliver electricity, and can be caused by a number of issues, including a damaged transmission tower or a lightning strike.
