A fire that left two trucks and a van with scorch marks and shattered windows appears to have started in the van before spreading to the other vehicles, Nanaimo RCMP said Monday.

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene, but investigators did not find enough evidence to proceed with arson or mischief charges, reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said in a statement.

Nanaimo firefighters were called to a two-storey building near the intersection of Pine Street and Victoria Road for what was initially described as a structure fire shortly after 6:30 a.m., but police took over the investigation, since the fire appeared to involve only the vehicles, said Nanaimo Fire Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Jodi Le Masurier.

The two trucks and van were all behind a tape cordon on Sunday.
