Saanich businessman Timothy Kane will represent the Liberal party in the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands in the upcoming federal election.

Kane was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate on Sunday, at Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney.

In 1991, Kane and his wife and business partner, Sheena Pennie, founded Delta Media Inc., an Ottawa-based communications firm. The two live in Saanich and have three adult children and two grandchildren.

Kane volunteered on former Liberal MLA Ida Chong’s failed bids in the provincial election in 2013 and Victoria mayoralty race in 2014.

Green party Leader Elizabeth May represents Saanich-Gulf Islands.

The NDP and Conservative Party of Canada have not yet chosen a candidate in the riding.

In the 2011 election, the Greens took 46.3 per cent of the vote, followed by the Conservatives with 35.7 per cent and the NDP with 11.9 per cent.

The Liberals trailed with 6.1 per cent.

Prior to the Greens, the Conservatives held the riding from 1997 through to the 2011 election.

When the federal electoral boundaries were changed in October 2013, the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands ended up slightly smaller, losing part of urban Saanich to the Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke riding.
